Gym Teacher: The Movie Press Release
March 13th, 2008

Law & Order: SVU star Christopher Meloni slips out of his usual dramatic groove to star in Nickelodeon's first family primetime movie, in the original comedy, Gym Teacher: The Movie, to premiere this August (date and time TBD). Joining Meloni in the film will be co-star Amy Sedaris (Strangers with Candy) and Nickelodeon's Nathan Kress (iCarly), in a combination of stars and story that will delight and entertain both kids and their parents.

Meloni steps into the sneakers of underdog Dave Stewie, a humiliated former gymnastics gold medal contender-turned gym teacher who gets a shot at redemption as he vies for the coveted Gym Teacher of the Year Award. But with dorky Roland Waffle (Kress) new to his team, Stewie's no shoo-in, and the coach and the gym-averse kid get mutual makeovers in their bid to be winners.

As the slightly bonkers principal of Hamm Lake Middle School, Sedaris' Abby Hofmann holds a not-so-secret crush on Stewie. David Alan Grier's prep school coach, Shelley Bragg, is dedicated to proving Stewie a failure and bringing the trophy home for himself. Chelah Horsdal gets Stewie's heart-a- thumping and complicates his life as Hamm Lake's new English teacher Winnie Bleeker, who just happens to be Roland's over-protective widowed mom. Playing himself, former Olympian Bruce Jenner turns up in a cameo as Stewie's idol.

Gym Teacher is a Nickelodeon production in association with Dolphin Entertainment. Executive producers are Lauren Levine (Bridge to Terabithia, Shredderman Rules!), Stanley M. Brooks (Broken Trail), Jim Head and Bill O'Dowd. Paul Dinello (Strangers with Candy, The Colbert Report) directs a teleplay by brothers Daniel and Steven Altiere.

Current TV has a great video up from when Paul and Amy were doing publicity for the Strangers With Candy movie in the summer of 06. The topic was whether Paul knew how much discussion there is on the message board about how hot he is . Amy Sedaris comments from off screen. A must watch!

Dan Dinello has also put up a video of a movie called Tree Surgeon that Paul, Stephen Colbert, Amy Sedaris and Mitch Rouse worked on. Stephen stars as a troubled tree surgeon. There are a lot of SWC undertones to this and even some lines that are later worked into the show. Paul's part isn't big but this is too bizarre to not watch.

Paul worked with Amy Sedaris on this adorable new advertisement for Microsoft Office 2008 called Rabbit Rescue. It features Amy working in a cupcake shop, Dusty Food Cupcakes (the actual name she gave to her cupcake business she runs out of her home) and she has a legion of bunny workers who help her get her unorganized paperwork in order.

Stephen Colbert's audiobook I Am America (And So Can You!) which Paul abridged and appears on has been nominated for 3 Audies, the awards given for outstanding audiobooks. It is nominated in the following categories: Achievement in Abridgement, Humor, & Multi-Voiced Performance. If you would like to hear the audiobook for yourself check it out at It features several guests besides Paul including Amy Sedaris David Pasquesi & Greg Hollimon and is "shouted by the author". Thanks to No Fact Zone for the info

An page has also been set up for the TV movie Paul is directing (see more info below) Gym Teacher: The Movie. Christopher Meloni (of Law & Order: SVU) is listed as the lead right now, although I'm sure the listing is subject to change. As always, if anyone has anymore information, please email me!!

Also check out the myspace page for the soundtrack with great tunes from Jazz great Fats Waller and original tracks by Jean-Michel Bernard which can be bought on

Paul is set to direct the Nickelodeon TV movie called "Gym Teacher". Here is some information:

Title: GYM TEACHER, TV Movie for NICKELODEON. EXEC PROD, Daniel Altiere, Jim Head, Steve Altiere, Lauren Levine, Stanley M. Brooks; PROD, Scott McAboy; DIR, Paul Dinello; SCR, Daniel Altiere, Steve Altiere. Contract: AFTRA. Shoot Dates: January 22, 2008 (in Vancouver, Canada). Breakdown-- Shelly Braggs: 35-45, African-American Male. He's the Gym Coach at an exclusive prep academy, and he considers Dave Stewie and his public school kids trash. Obnoxious and conniving, he never loses an opportunity to mock and humiliate Dave. Shelly is convinced that Dave and his inept new student, Roland, will go down in defeat at the national competition - but when he and Dave later go toe-to-toe in a tie breaker, Shelly realizes that he's been outclassed, as he goes down in well-deserved defeat. Lead; Winnie: Mid 30s, Caucasian Female. A radiantly beautiful woman with "doe eyes and a smile that would pop your kickball (even if you just checked its pressure), she's the kind of girl you would want on your team, for the rest of your life and into the post game." The new English teacher at Dave's school, she captures Dave's adoration at first glance. Widowed in a freak softball accident, Winnie is tremendously protective of her son Roland, the new student who seems certain to ruin Dave's chances of a national title. When Winnie learns that Dave was letting Roland compete in "dangerous" competitive sports, against her wishes, she's livid -- but she is later proud when Roland proves his mettle under extreme pressure. Some Be Kind Rewind news: The bad news is that it's release date has been pushed back again to February 22nd, 2008. It will premiere at Sundance on January 18th, so hopefully the new date is a strategy to let the buzz surround the movie. There is an interesting article from the LA Times about the promotion for the movie at the premieres (which will include a "sweding" studio where people are encouraged to do their own take on the movie). The video below is a cool behind the scenes look at the movie. No Paul unfortunately but a great look at this unique movie.

I wouldn't normally link to ebay auctions, but this is for charity. Up for grabs is a life-size Stephen Colbert standee used to advertise I Am America (And So Can You!) and it is signed by the writers, including Paul. Proceeds from this auction will benefit LIFEbeat - The Music Industry Fights AIDS [auction link]

Happy Birthday Paul! In celebration some fans have sent in their best MS Paint cupcake masterpieces, which can be seen here. If you'd like to contribute a cupcake email me at and I'll add it!

October 28th, 2007
Paul was at the 92nd Street Y on Oct. 23rd along with the other co-writers to help promote Stephen Colbert's book I Am America (And So Can You!) and answered questions and signed books. Flickr user Sachyn snapped this photo. (sorry I didn't know Paul would be at this event beforehand!)

IAA (ASCY) has also been #1 on the New York Times Best Seller list in Hardcover Nonfiction and Paul's name is listed. [Screencap since the list will change]

This isn't really "news", but sweet none-the-less. Paul is listed on the celebrity supporter list of Human Society of the United States ProtectSeals campaign. Aww! (thanks to Alison for pointing this out)

Here's another tidbit from Amy Sedaris about the HBO pilot she and Paul are working on:
"I’m working on a pilot for HBO, but that doesn’t mean that it will go past the pilot. The budget is really low – it’s part of an HBO experimental program, that Paul Dinello and I are writing now and will shoot in January. It’s under the same umbrella as Flight of the Conchords. The tone is what were working on right now. It’s going to a be a hospitality show woman doing it out of her home. I haven’t really figured that out yet. I’d be like the lady on the local hospitality show, instead of Martha Stewart or Julia Child. They are true experts. I’d just be winging it." [source]

I really hope this goes beyond a pilot! It sounds like it would be wonderful, especially if it's anything like the tone of Flight of the Conchords, which is a riot.

The countdown is on for Stephen Colbert's book & audiobook I Am America (And So CanYou!), to be released October 9th, which Paul contributed heavily too (but will likely go uncredited). Paul is on the audiobook (to what capacity, I'm not certain) and was the producer of the project. and iTunes are going to be releasing an advance of the audiobook on Oct 5th according to this article:
Mr. Colbert worked with Paul Dinello, who plays Geoffrey Jellineck, the closeted gay art teacher on Comedy Central’s “Strangers With Candy,” to edit the book for audio. Along with Mr. Colbert and Mr. Dinello, the 14-member cast for the audio book includes Mr. Stewart and the comedian Amy Sedaris.

A sample is currently on audible at the moment. If you would like to purchase a physical copy of the audio book (and of course the book itself) check is out the links above to the left and right for a great price on

birthday cupcakes! is 1 year old today! It's hard to believe a year has actually passed, what a resounding success it has been for me! (ok, and Paul too.) Thank you so much to all the people who have been so supportive of me and the site. An extra big thanks to the people who have made donations, I've been taken aback by all the generosity. And of course, my heartfelt thanks to Paul for taking the time to do the interview for the site, and generally being the best fansite subject a girl could hope for.

Another news item! Jamie Kennedy has posted on his myspace the pilot episode of "Me & Lee?" that Paul directed back in March! The two parts can be seen on the Me & Lee page.

September 21st, 2007
Paul has been working on a show for HBO and now some answers as to what it is from Amy Sedaris:

"Right now, Paul Dinello [Mr. Jellineck on “Strangers with Candy”] and I are working on a TV show based loosely on my book for HBO, so we’re writing that right now." [source]

I am already lamenting my lack of premium cable. In other news, unfortunately the release date for Be Kind Rewind, which Paul has a small role in as a lawyer, Mr. Rooney has had the release date pushed back to January 18th, 2008.

August 30th, 2007
Paul produced and abridged Stephen Colbert's upcoming audiobook which will accompany his new book I Am America (And So Can You!). Paul will be making an appearance on the audiobook along with other Strangers With Candy alums Amy Sedaris, Greg Holliman and David Pasquesi. The book and audio book will be available on October 9th, 2007. As more information is available it will be added to the I Am America page.

The trailer for Michel Gondry's new film, Be Kind Rewind, has finally been released and Paul is featured! He plays a lawyer who tries to block the copies of famous films two store clerks are making (Jack Black and Mos Def). He can be seen about 1:45 in. Watch a high def version, the youtube version below or download the High Def version. (right click>save as 170mb mov)

Synopsis of film: Jerry (Jack Black) is a junkyard worker who attempts to sabotage a power plant he suspects of causing his headaches. But he inadvertently causes his brain to become magnetized, leading to the unintentional destruction of all the movies in his friend's (Mos Def) store. In order to keep the store's one loyal customer, an elderly lady with a tenuous grasp on reality, the pair re-create a long line of films including The Lion King, Rush Hour, Ghostbusters, When We Were Kings, Back to the Future, Driving Miss Daisy, and Robocop , putting themselves and their townspeople into it. They become the biggest stars in their neighborhood.

Not exactly breaking news, but "aww!" worthy nonetheless! Paul was spotted July 11th, 2007, at Todd Oldham's book signing for his homage to illustrator Charley Harper (hosted by Amy Sedaris, who brought her famous cupcakes with handmade "pokes") by blogger Andy from Apparently Paul spent most of the evening on the phone with his mom:

"Was "Strangers with Candy" star Paul Dinello on his cell phone in the lobby of the entire party fielding offers to direct the sequel of the "Strangers" film? No, he was talking his mother through some of the more basic steps of emailing on a Mac computer. I don't know why this was so irritating, but it was." [source]

There will be a new appearance of Paul as Tad the Building Manager on The Colbert Report, hopefully within the next two weeks. Birdchick was at the Bald Eagle Festival in Connecticut and saw them recording the new Tad appearance [warning spoilers]:

"One of these things is not like the other. Can you tell which one of the people in this photo is in fact NOT a birder but a member of the Colbert Report crew? I'm not sure what the segment is going to be about, but the crew was there ALL day filming all sorts of different segments.

The producers said it should air sometime in the next two weeks. We exchanged cards and she said she would try to give me a head's up when it was about to air. At one point I saw the camera crew filming him in a port-a-potty and he would pop his head out with binoculars to watch for eagles. He was trying to "shoot an eagle" with a gun at the eagle festival. We were all asked to not laugh at whatever he did and to try and look angry, bewildered, confused--anything but laugh. It was hard not to laugh at his antics though, he was funny and weird." Check out Birdchick's great blog entry!

Another visitor to the Bald Eagle Festival spotted Paul as well, Check out Waterwitch's photos in her blog entry here.

Big news! Here is some information on Paul's upcoming projects:

"Mr. Burnout which I'm trying to cast now. It's about a teacher who looses the will to teach but shows up anyway- mostly to torment students.

I'm working with Stephen Colbert on his book based on his show.

I'm going to direct John Leguizamo in a film version of his one man show Sexaholic.

Pioneer Town is a script that Stephen Colbert and I wrote. I'm hoping to shoot it this summer. It's about a guy who works at an American Settler theme park and is upset when a corporation takes over with plans to update it."

So there is a lot to look forward to in the coming months.

January 10th, 2007
According to this message board, Paul will be performing in Let's Have a Ball this Saturday, January 13th at 7:30pm at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre New York. He isn't listed as a guest on the UCB official site, so you should call (212.366.9176) to confirm.

The independent films Paul made with his uncle, Dan Dinello, will be showing in Sacramento California. The schedules can be viewed here. I would suggest calling ahead to confirm the films will be showing, just in case.

Well the cupcakes were a resounding success (as far as I'm concerned)! I'm so pleased that so many people submitted them you would swear they are for me. Since I'm going to be leaving them up all week, late submissions are definitely welcome. It's the thought that counts!

And the Tad segment was a go! What a great way to celebrate Paul's birthday. Be sure to tune into the Colbert Report on Wed. and Thurs. at 11pm/10central for the rest of the segment.

A The Fuck Monkeys tidbit about Paul's last performance with them from Matt Lapin:

"When Dinello played my show last him and a writer on Colbert named Laura Krafft did a bit where they were irish folk singer who used to be in a relationship, and broke up. So it was Dinello with the guitar, and Krafft singing with him. It deevolves into them arguing, and Paul getting upset about how she dumped him. It was damn funny. Anyway, not sure what he'll do next time."

:: It seems we can be looking for Paul as Tad the Building Manager coming up in October on The Colbert Report. The segment will be about Tad going to Colbert county Alabama to open up "The Stephen Colbert Museum and Gift Shop" in Tuscumbia. "It'll be a running adventure of Tad's effort to get Stephen's dream off the ground," Cooperman said. He said the crew wants the museum's grand opening to be portrayed as a big deal, possibly even including a local high school band and cheerleaders. "They are interested in spotlighting the whole town," Shoemaker said. [read the whole article]
